Martha Raye

MarthaRaye.Jpg Remember Martha Raye? The most unforgivable oversight of TV is that her shows were not taped. This is a great story about a great woman. I was unaware of her credentials or where she is buried. Somehow I just can't see Brittany Spears, Paris Hilton, or Jessica Simpson doing what this...

Remember these posters?

The plankowners of the USS James E. Kyes may have memory of these posters. It took a lot of guts to get on a destroyer during WWII.

DASH saved by a fist

For years, I often told the story of how I saved a million dollar DASH helicopter from dumping into the Pacific Ocean. The DASH Transmitter was always near the rear of the ET shack, however the ET’s were not responsible for maintenance. One day, my division officer came running down to the ET shack ...

SPS-40 Stories

The SPS-40 Air Search Radar system impacted my life in several ways. It started when I went to AN/SPS-40 School in November, 1963 at Great Lakes. Our president, JFK, was assassinated while I was in school. Maybe that was a bad omen for me. Six years later, I was working on the SPS-40 on the Kyes, tr...

Re: Remember Mary Soo

Here's another of my memories of Hong Kong.

I was standing on the fantail when we were anchored in Hong Kong Harbor when a little Chinese boy floated up to the ship on a log.
He had a small tin can resting on the log in front of him.

He yelled up to us: "Hey Sailors! You want dirty pictures?"

Remember Victory at Sea?

As a teenager, the Victory at Sea series on TV was one of my favorites.

I even had the record album of the sound track and played it constantly.

The origin of Jumping Jimmy

I asked Rick Warden what is the origin of the term Jumping Jimmy. This was his answer: All I know about "Jumpin Jimmy" term is that when the ship was in Australia a kangaroo was given to the ship (early 60's I think). The Kangaroo made the ride home where he went to the San Diego zoo. Therefore, Jum...

Remember this Incident?

At the Kyes reunion, I talked to shipmates about an incident that occurred during an ammo replenishment in the Gulf of Tonkin. They all said that they never heard of this. I know I didn't dream it. I told the story a few times over the years. I don't recall the year or the month, but I recall that w...

Remember Mary Soo

Life Magazine had a full length article about Mary Soo.

She was a legend in Hong Kong and painted the Kyes many times as she did every Navy ship that anchored in Hong Kong harbour for many years.
